History & Background
The Hewlett-Packard 48 series is one of the most legendary lines in the history of calculators. This series is designed for engineers. In fact, there is some evidence that this series flew on the Space Shuttles.
The 48 line spanned thirteen years across five models, starting with the 48SX in 1990. All of them used HP's in-house Saturn processors, which were designed specifically for use in their calculators (starting with the HP 71B handheld computer).
Uniquely, especially for the calculators of the time, several of the series' models (indicated with an X in the model number) featured expansion ports where one could add either additional RAM or a special ROM with libraries.
I own one of those ROM cards, the Sparcom Mathematics Pac, which includes a variety of useful operations for many different math fields.

This specimen was gifted to me by my dad, alongside the Sparcom Mathematics Pac slotted in it today.
Notes
- Like other HP calculators, the 48 series has the capability to communicate over infrared via IrDA.
- The 48GX is capable of 3D graphing, however demanding it is...
